This collection of paintings is a survey of my exploration of the world around me, looking at earth from the satellites above us. There is a mixture of Australian explorers and friends, as well as turtles roaming under a star- studded night sky.
Much of the inspiration for these images comes from my childhood in Sweden, where the winter nights are long and dark, and on a clear night the milky way shines brilliantly, much like it does here in Australia when you leave the bright lights of the cities.
I was also inspired by the wonderful people at The Sydney Observatory when I had the honour of being the Artist in Residence. This led me to make some miniature portraits of some of the scientists at The Observatory. This in turn led me to make some paintings with past Explorers of the Australian continent.
I decided to use satellite photos of earth as a reflection on all the technology we are now using.
All paintings have a story attached to them, for example, The Turtles are Coming in Arnhemland, is based on an Aboriginal story about how when the rainy season is arriving it rains turtles. I thought this was a delightful idea and promptly made the painting.
About the Artist Jeanette Landstedt
I was born, raised and schooled in Sweden. Having travelled through Europe and lived in Paris, New York and Chicago, I decided to backpack through Asia and arrived in Sydney. I totally fell in love with Australia and decided to do my formal art studies here. After 6 years of studies I was awarded a BA of Fine Art, a Post Graduate in Professional Art and an associated Dip of Education.
Since then I have also lived on a farm outside Orange, as well as recently on a rural property in Lovedale, and am now a happy resident of Coal Point.
I have participated in many exhibitions over the years, one of the highlights would be The Portia Geach Memorial Award.
