Stand up for Poetry is a Hunter region poetry program that encourages poetic expression and skills development while fostering the poetry scene through workshops and special events. Events will be held across the region from July – November 2021 including poetry writing and performance workshops, spoken word performance opportunities, a science poetry workshop, a collaboration with Cuplet monthly poetry night, and The Great Debate where poets share their poetry and love of their chosen poetry form. The program will also host local slam heats as part of the Australian Poetry Slam, with the Hunter Regional Slam Final taking place as part of the Riverlights Multicultural Festival in Maitland.

Stand Up for Poetry is a partnership between Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens Libraries.

Heats for the Australian Poetry Slam are currently underway and this year there will be one combined online Hunter regional heat on 29 October. The Australian Poetry Slam is one of the largest performing writers' programs in the world.

To help poets get ready for the Hunter heat we are offering a free online poetry slam workshop on 21 October, 3-5pm via Zoom!

In this online workshop we will explore the dynamic space of spoken word/ slam poetry, including experimenting with writing techniques and witnessing the many and varied forms slam poetry can take. Be ready to write and bring a slam poem you are working on. Come and take a dive...and get ready for the Australian Poetry Slam 2021. The workshop will be presented by Gillian Swain from Poetry Al Fresco.

This workshop is part of Stand Up for Poetry, a Hunter regional poetry program presented by Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, and Port Stephens Libraries. It is an exciting series of poetry workshops, panels, spoken word showcases and slam heats across the Hunter region in 2021/2022.

Numbers are limited for this free virtual event.
