Stand up for Poetry

Stand up for Poetry is a Hunter region poetry program that encourages poetic expression and skills development while fostering the poetry scene through workshops and special events. Events will be held across the region from July – November 2021 including poetry writing and performance workshops, spoken word performance opportunities, a science poetry workshop, a collaboration with Cuplet monthly poetry night, and The Great Debate where poets share their poetry and love of their chosen poetry form. The program will also host local slam heats as part of the Australian Poetry Slam, with the Hunter Regional Slam Final taking place as part of the Riverlights Multicultural Festival in Maitland.

Stand Up for Poetry is a partnership between Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens Libraries. 

 Event partners include: Australian Poetry Slam, Word Travels.

There are 15 events, workshops and activities to attend across our region.

Open Spoken Word Showcase: Storytelling and Poetry

Warners Bay Theatre

Join us for an afternoon of Storytelling and Poetry as local poets and writers perform and present their words live on stage at Warners Bay Theatre.  The afternoon will include an open mic session, those interested sharing their words will be able to secure their time in the spotlight on arrival.

 

APS Poetry Slam Heat – Lake Macquarie

Come and the fun and entertainment of a Regional Heat of the Australian Poetry Slam. Performing writers are given a microphone, a live audience, and just two minutes to capture the crowd. The host selects five judges at random from the crowd. After each performance, judges hold up scorecards using a 1-10 scale to one decimal place, with 10 being the highest. Of the five scores for each poet, only the middle three scores are counted. The judges’ decisions are final. Whether you're a poet or an audience member, you can be part of the search for the next slam champion!

Poets register for the event from 5.30pm.
