Lake Macquarie locals are encouraged to embrace the gift of giving and support hundreds of families doing it tough this festive season by donating to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, led by local charity Samaritans.

Samaritans Diocesan Chief Executive John Barriga said with rising costs of living putting further pressure on those already struggling, it was important people did what they could to give back.

“Our Emergency Relief Centres in the Hunter and Central Coast have been constantly exhausted from their supplies each week,” he said.

“Gifts donated at the Mayor’s Giving Tree will go to a child in need and support many families this Christmas who will not be able to afford to purchase for their loved ones.

“Those who are unable to donate a gift but would still like to contribute can donate funds via our website, which will go toward the cost of food given at our Emergency Relief Centres on Christmas Day.”

The appeal was launched at Lake Macquarie City Council chambers today, where a group of students from Speers Point Public School sung Christmas carols.

The Samaritans will also host its 22nd Christmas Lunch in the Park, offering people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage or loneliness compassion and a warm meal on Christmas Day.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said donated toys, gifts and non-perishable items would help the Samaritans provide for families struggling to make ends meet at Christmas.

“These gifts and donations will relieve pressure on families and individuals who are facing challenges and allow them to enjoy Christmas,” she said.

“Lake Macquarie has shown such community spirit in 2022 and I’m looking forward to seeing that continue with the Christmas Appeal and into the new year.”

Samaritans is the welfare arm of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, providing care and support for disability, youth, family, mental health and community groups through more than 100 services in the Hunter Region and NSW.

Items can be dropped off at any Lake Mac Libraries branch, or Council’s Speers Point administration building, until Wednesday 14 December.
