Ever wanted to write or illustrate picture books?

Join local author, Katrina McKelvey and local illustrator, Kirrili Lonergan in this informative workshop as they share their tips and tricks on how to write and illustrate picture books. They will also share their knowledge of publishing pathways from their 12 years in the Australian children’s publishing industry. Bring a pen and paper as they’ll challenge you with a few tasks along the way.

Katrina McKelvey is a children’s author, former primary school teacher and mother living in Newcastle, NSW. She’s highly involved in CBCA, SCBWI, Littlescribe, community events, literary conferences and festivals, and loves visiting schools. She’s written many children's picture books and educational readers including her new title, My Heart (March, 2024) and three Healthy Harold big books for the newly released Life Education Australia Early Years program. Katrina’s left-handed, loves tea, scary movies and rollercoasters, and is addicted to mint chocolate. When she was little, a hot air balloon accidentally landed in her backyard.

Kirrili Lonergan is a picture book illustrator, art therapist and a former paediatric nurse who relates warmly to the needs of children. She is the illustrator for the Lessons of a LAC picture book series and the co-creator of the Lessons of a LAC anxiety management package. She has numerous other titles including the Healthy Harold preschool books for Life Ed Early Years Learning Program, supporting health, safety and emotional well-being in children. She was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology of Australia Awards in 2018 for Ollie's Treasure and 2022 for But I’m NOT Hungry for my Dinner.

Parking and Venue information

Toronto Library, located on the corner of Brighton Ave & Pemell St, has a public carpark adjacent to the building with accessible parking available that provides access via a ramp to the library. The venue has accessible toilets outside the facility. The library can be accessed by public buses.
