The craft of embroidery has provided a creative outlet and a form of relaxation for stitchers worldwide over several centuries. It is an artform that requires an appreciation of colour and detail, and a patient and practiced hand to create beautiful textile artworks.

The Hunter Valley Tapestry Group was formed in August 1992 to bring together people of all levels and interests with an appreciation for the art and craft of embroidery. The group is based in Newcastle in the heart of the beautiful Hunter Valley.  The Hunter Valley Tapestry Group strives to bring together people with an interest in sewn tapestry, share the skills and techniques of sewn tapestry as an art form, and promote and develop sewn tapestry by means of meetings and displays.

Members of the group meet twice a month, sharing skills and techniques with each other. The group offers the opportunity to enjoy the company of like-minded people who support each other and share the journey as new works emerge and are completed. Some members have been tapestry and needlework enthusiasts for many years, while others are just discovering the joys of needlework. At their exhibitions and meetings, you will see a range of needlework techniques on display such as Cross-stitch, Stumpwork, Blackwork and Hardanger.

This exhibition brings together the group's diverse creations, drawing on the skill set within the Hunter Valley Tapestry Group and their passion for stitching by hand. Drawing inspiration from nature and whimsy as well as decorative practical/functional pieces, the displayed works show how clever use of colour and different types of stitches can marry together to bring each piece to life.

This exhibition will run from the 9th of May to the 19th of July.
