Kristal Duffy: Shapes of Waves

Kristal Duffy Artwork

Shapes of Waves is an exhibition by Kristal Duffy, a Novocastrian artist working in and around the coast and Lake Macquarie region drawing inspiration from the waters and landscapes of her surroundings. Kristal is exhibiting three pieces: A Couple of Turtles (2023), Abstract Wave (2023), and Rock Pools (2023).

Kristal's passion for representing the climate and how it is changing is a discernible undertone throughout her work, reflected in her use of suggested movement and shifting colour throughout her painting. Living along the coast shapes her ideas and inspires her to explore a range of mediums on canvas, often using the motif of the triptych to explore the beauty, shape, scale, and movement of the coastal landscape, exploring contrasting ideas such as smooth and rough, push and pull, over and under.

Kristal uses the acrylic pouring method to channel the inspiration and energy of her surroundings, incorporating other mixed media such as gold leaf and rust, applying these with non-traditional tools such as pallet knives, large brushes, sponges, and electric blow dryers to create her effects.

Kristal focuses on work that is an innovation to her world. She grew up on and creates art on the unceded lands of the Awabakal people. Threaded throughout Kristal Duffy’s works are iconic coastal colours and imagery. Kristal is currently undergoing a mentorship at Tinkat Alley Art Studio at Fassifern, Lake Macquarie. Kristal is deeply inspired by the world around her and cites Jamaican marine life artist Guy Harvey, Australian artist Brett Whitely, and Acrylic artist Molly Leach as major influences.

All are welcome to attend the Opening Event to celebrate Kristal Duffy's Shapes of Waves on Saturday the 24th of February. High Tea will be served. Please join us at Charlestown Library from 10am.
