History of Lake Macquarie: Carey Bay Zoo

Located on the shores of Carey Bay, where the caravan park now stands was Toronto Zoo. The zoo could attract up to 3000 visitors of a summer Sunday and featured a collection of over 500 birds, native and exotic animals including monkeys, a lion and lioness.

Mawson: One Hundred Years of Australian Antarctic Expeditions

One hundred years ago, Douglas Mawson began a new scientific expedition to the Antarctic coast. They arrived at Commonwealth Bay on January 8, 1912, becoming the first Australian-led Antarctic expedition. Popular biographer Peter FitzSimons's recently published book Mawson : and the ice men of the heroic age - Scott, Shackelton and Amundsen, brings events of the bygone polar exploration era back to life. This title is now available to reserve at Lake Macquarie City Library.
